As an overhead door technician who has installed and repaired plenty of garage doors over the years, I know that nothing can be more annoying than an old, noisy garage door; especially if you have a bedroom above the garage. I understand that garage door repair requires knowledge and experience but what I am about to share is easy and simple. Here is how to get rid of the noise in three simple steps without having to risk contact with parts under tension.

Step 1

Check all the screws and nuts on the hinges and make sure they are all tight and secure as well as the two screws on the side of your door. These screws keep the vertical and horizontal tracks in place. Locating these screws is easy since they are always in between the two top panels; make sure they are not missing or loose.

Step 2

Ensure the chain or belt on the garage door opener is tight. If loose, you can put more tension on the chain just by turning the nut on the screw. There is only one screw on the chain so you can’t go wrong.

Step 3

The 3rd step is most garage door technician’s secret, it will cost you less than ten bucks and you can get it from most hardware stores (Home depot, Canadian Tire and Lowe’s). You need to lubricate all rollers and hinges with “SILICON SPRAY”. It is both rust proof and an excellent lubricant. If your door needs serious repairs such as spring and cable replacement, please do not try to do it yourself as it can be dangerous and life threatening, call a qualified garage door repair company.
